True Variable Speed Grinding

It's sad there aren't more variable speed grinders out there. Not just the so called low speed, which are still pretty fast, or the two speed, which are, also, pretty fast, but actual variable speed grinders for people doing more delicate work.

I bought a four wheel grinder off craigslist. It was a DIY critter using healthy shafts, pillow blocks and a 240 volt 3,400 RPM motor to push it. As luck would have it, I scored a 3/4 horse sewing machine motor and controller, so replaced the 240 volt monster with it. Now it runs at from 0 to 2,400 RPM.

The variable speeds make using it for sharpening much easier, because I can slow it enough I don't have to worry as much about overheating the steel of blades.

I usually run it around 500 RPM, but can crank it up to beat up on, for example, a mower blade or a chunk of iron.

I did install two CBN wheels on it and they have spoiled me, when sharpening high speed steel and such.
