Glitches need hacks...or something.
OK; well the spools I bought from Bear Woods Supply are perfect except they're supposed to be mounted on 1/4" dowels for axles.
I was a bit suspicious because the catalogue didn't give a spec for the bored out hole in them. Turns out (no pun intended) that it's actually 19/64ths or 7.5mm. Needless to say they're a pretty sloppy fit on the 1/4" dowels.
Bsing with the neighbours and someone suggested a sleeve; my first reaction was 'Not happening!", but then I thought about it and when I came home I checked my stock of shrink tubing and found a size that's a great fit.
Works like a hot damn...pun intended!

Another glitch. Not a happy camper.
I was mounting the 24 tandem wheels on their 24 axle pins when I discovered their were only 23 in the small container I had placed them in after painting the exposed hub portion of each.
So, they came in a pack of 25, from Bear Woods Supply; and I had taken a scrap of plywood, drilled 4 rows of 6 holes each, and stuck the pins in them for painting.
????... I've lost one of the painted ones as well as the spare 25th.
This morning I'm going to lift the motor/fan unit off the dust collector on the off chance they got sucked in.
I swept the floor yesterday, and cleaned up the work area. i obviously also checked everywhere that I may have put them for future use (now!)
Last night I re-ordered another set of 25 on the off chance the missing ones moved to another dimension...

You might have a wheel burglar afoot. Maybe some critter who thought it was a cookie. Be sure not to use the crane without a wheel, it might tip over.

I'm convinced that holes from our dimension into some other one open up at the exact moment that things fall off my bench. The falling motion must be what opens them up. Once in a while the hole opens from the other direction and they fall back into ours but that can takes weeks or even months.

I was taking a plunge router apart a few years ago to clean sawdust out of the columns. I lost my grip on it and the base popped out and I heard that little brass plug that goes between the locking lever and the column hit the floor. I scanned the floor with no luck, got down on my hands and knees with a flashlight and looked that way for a while, then finally swept the floor (which wasn't particularly dirty at the time) and sifted through the debris in the dust pan. Still no luck. After an hour of looking I gave up and ordered a new one. Two months later I took a tool bag off the shelf under a nearby bench and there was the plug sitting on top of it. The top of the bag was about two feet off the floor and about 5 or 6 feet away from where the plug fell out. It's literally impossible for it to bounce that high and that far away. The dimensional portal explanation is the only one that seems plausible.

That white cord? I had to buy a two pound spool of hard braided nylon...3/16" I think, maybe a little thinner. The label says #30 whatever that means.
I have enough line now for the rest of my life and then some. I'd like to see some rugrat try and break that stuff!

Ever work with "Flywashers"?

My most frequently "disappearing" hardware has always been an E-clip or TruArc ring, (Aka "Flywasher"). They seem to be the only mechanical object that can exceed the speed of light instantly. They are there, then not. You hear where they have been, sometimes 3 or 4 places, but their final resting point is always silent, which usually means "never to be found". It's instinct to look where you last heard the hit, but it's never there, and quite likely somewhere in the opposite direction.

A friend coined the name "Flywasher" and it fits so well that I have used it for about 60 years now. He was my partner in a vending machine business, and Seeburg Juke Boxes used many E-clips and TruArc rings in their mechanisms. Somehow, he always managed to avoid any major repairs on them and left them for me to fix, likely because of the number of these "Flywashers" in the mechanisms.

Since then, I have always kept large assortments of all versions and sizes of these in divided boxes. I have learned to just get another one out of these boxes and not even try to look for them when they suddenly break the speed of light in front of me. I have magnets in my dust collectors, and magnets on telescoping wands, even a broom with magnets, but rarely do these flywashers turn up on one of those magnets. If they do, I just put them in one of the divided compartments of these boxes, to give them a second chance to hide better the next time that I try to use them.

Many moons ago i worked for IBM, and during my training had a tour of the Don Mills plant (Ontario). The tour guide mentioned that the assembly staff were instructed to NOT stop what they were doing if they dropped a part. Just pull another from the parts frays and carry on.
No idea what the fate of the parts picked up by the floor sweeping equipment was.

That's my experience with finding them too, magnets rarely improve your odds of locating an errant one.

I too worked 26 years for "Big Blue", but designing control systems for large scale high speed manufacturing automation in East Fishkill, NY, but was loaned out several times for certain projects like the NASA Apollo, Skylab, and the Space Shuttle.
